5 ways to create and keep your company culture in a coworking space

Office & Culture

Creating a culture is an integral part of any company; its value cannot be underestimated. It helps employees snap into the tone of the company and also helps grow relationships within the company.

Companies working in coworking spaces are on the rise as are companies putting effort into establishing and maintaining their own company culture. But it can be difficult to maintain the two together. Here are our tips on how to maintain your company culture while also working in a coworking space.

A solid foundation

Your company culture is the personality of your company and really is the starting point from where your company moves forward. It can be difficult to maintain company culture regardless of location if your culture is not clearly defined and achievable.

Ask yourself these questions: have you set realistic goals for your company? Is your company mission statement in line with what you want to achieve? Are all of your employees aware of the company’s goals and know what is expected of them?

By answering these simple questions you can learn a lot about your company culture. If you find a problem, fix it. By creating a solid company culture early on, maintaining it will become a lot easier.

Regular meetings

Getting your team together regularly is crucial in maintaining your company culture. Most coworking spaces also have meeting rooms or even event spaces. Book a room for an hour once a week when you know all members of your team will be in.

This is a perfect opportunity for each member of the team to discuss what they are up to for the week and allows other team members to add their own ideas and suggestions. A remote way of also doing this is to have a company online project management tool. Team members upload their current and future tasks to the platform, while all other member in the organisation can see what everyone is up to and who is working on what.

A team meeting can also be an opportunity to reinforce the company’s goals for the year, a gentle reminder of where the company is headed and how all employees fit in the plan. This keeps employees on track and the company’s culture maintained.

Keep in touch

This is one of the biggest ways companies can fall down when maintaining their company culture. Communication is important from the top down but also among employees, especially in a coworking environment.

Weekly meetings are one way to keep communication flowing. If an employee can’t make the meeting, ask if they could Skype. If not, make sure they are kept up to date of what happened. Even missing one meeting can leave an employee feeling out of touch with the company.

Communication between employees should also be a top priority. In a coworking space, it can be a little daunting calling across the room to another member of your team. Emailing works fine, but why not set up a group chat through Gmail or Slack instead. Most online project management sites, like Asana, also have a chat option. This helps employees keep in touch with one another without disturbing the entire coworking office.

Witnessing your culture

When maintaining your company culture it is important to see it in action. Identifying instances where your culture really worked and areas where it didn’t, will help you maintain it.

One way of doing this is having a team meeting every few weeks. Pinpoint moments from the past few weeks when your company culture was really strong and moments when it was weak. Discuss these moments with your team and figure out how to build on them.

From this, you will be able to see the areas where you company culture is really working and areas where it needs some improvement. This will not only help you maintain your culture but also improve it.
