News & Media

This radio interview first aired on Newstalk 106-108fm on Saturday 29.07.2017

Glandore Director, Clare Kelly discussed the importance of workplace wellness with Dr. Ciara Kelly on the Alive and Kicking show live on Newstalk 106-108fm.

How can we keep workaholism at bay, while ensuring our wellness in the workplace is at its best? Here are our top five tips Clare shared on the show.

1. Awareness

Whether it’s with physical or mental health, at home or at work, Clare tells us how being aware of a problem developing is the first step in changing.

2. Ask yourself why

When it comes to burn-out or “workaholism”, Clare encourages us to figure out what the root of the problem is first. We should ask ourselves why we are overworking; perhaps it could be financial pressure, pressures at home or pressure in a relationship.

3. Company culture plays a part

Sometimes a company’s culture can encourage long hours or reward a behaviour of overworking. Clare talks about how employees can often feel pressured to work those longer hours or portay the optics of staying and being in the office later than necessary.

4. Take a break

Even if it’s just a short break during the day, Clare advises us to build a short break into our daily routine. She talks about the importance of getting out of the office or taking five or go for a walk, just to give yourself some time to clear your head and regroup for the day ahead.

5. It’s not always going to be perfect – and that’s okay

We can try our best to achieve a healthy work-life balance, but it’s not always going to be feasible. As Clare says, there will always be periods in our lives where we are going to feel pressured. There are going to be days where we don’t get to the gym or we have to work late, but it’s about recognising those times and forward planning for a better balance in the future.
