Five Minute Focus On: Alan Purcell, Tonisity International

Glandore Members & Partners

Tell us about yourself

I am a Chartered Accountant, and last year returned to Dublin having spent a few years living in Sydney. Shortly after my return I was offered the opportunity to be the first employee of Tonisity based here in Ireland.

Tell us about Tonisity

Tonisity is in the agri-tech industry, marketing and retailing the world’s first isotonic protein drink for pigs. Our product is a natural unique formula that reduces mortality rates in piglet litters and also increases the weight gain of the animals. Essential for feeding an ever growing world population.

What’s your role in Tonisity?

My role is General Manager, and I am tasked with doing everything and anything, from finance to operational matters. Recently I was involved in securing a manufacturing site here in Ireland for our product.

Tell us something about Tonisity we may not know

There are over 75m sows in the world, and they typically breed twice a year with an average of 12 piglets per litter. That is a lot of pigs!

What’s next for Tonisity?

We are continuing to expand into different markets and are in the process of opening an office in South America. We are also investigating the possibility of expanding our product line to target different animals.

What do you think the future of work is?

No longer being confined to Monday – Friday, 9 – 5, in one office. The opportunities to work from anywhere, at any time, with people in varying countries are fantastic. Our company has staff spread across several countries in several time zones and it does not inhibit us from doing our work efficiently and effectively.

What do you like about being a Glandore member?

Having a modern office in an excellent part of town, with a friendly team who are always on hand to help is very much appreciated.

What do you like about living and working in Dublin?

Since returning to Dublin, it feels like a completely different city than the one I left a few years ago. In such a short space of time Dublin has become far more culturally diverse, and is a mini version of London in my opinion. It is great to hear the different languages and accents around the city. Also I really enjoy how small and flat the city is, easy to cycle around – Dublin Bikes are something we should be very proud of!

Friday nights in or Friday nights out?

75% in, 25% out – need to blow off the steam every now and then.
