National Workplace Wellbeing Day–Top tips to look after your health at work
Wellness is a prominent topic in modern businesses. Companies are now, more than ever, encouraging their staff to truly take care of themselves, both physically and mentally. Both current and future generations will now experience a healthier approach to working than their predecessors, which is fantastic news for all involved.
Here at Glandore, we are huge supporters of workplace wellness and regularly host workshops for our members. This National Workplace Wellness day we have a host of events including a members breakfast, an all-day nutrition clinic and a lunchtime canal walk leaving from Fitzwilliam Hall at 12.30pm. We believe that workplace wellness is a key aspect of maintaining a healthy workplace culture and a positive environment for your employees.
However, for some businesses, this is a completely new concept. Employees who are used to eating lunch at their desk, who get stressed easily and stay back after hours may find it difficult to get into the habit of developing their personal wellbeing ritual. So, if this sounds like you, what can you do to keep on top of your health?
To celebrate the upcoming National Workplace Wellness Day, we have put together a few simple tips to help you better look after yourself in the workplace.
Work smarter, not harder
Working excessively long days can be a real drain on your mental health. They make you feel exhausted and will eventually have a negative impact on your productivity, meaning that the long hours you put in could go to waste.
Make time for small breaks during the day. These will help you keep focused on the tasks at hand.
You can also break your work day into manageable chunks. If you need to do admin or answer emails, set a specific time to do those things. This will help you keep on top of them.
By not getting bogged down from the get-go, you will notice your mood lift as you tick off tasks and get home earlier!
Get away from your desk
Lunch at work shouldn’t just consist of a quick sandwich while hunched over your keyboard. It should be a break away from your workload. It should be time for you, not your spreadsheets.
Try taking up some lunchtime activities to break up your day. Exercising is extremely popular during lunchtime for a lot of office workers. Going for a walk, a quick run or if your company has the facilities, why not make use of the gym.
Exercising during your lunch break and making the time to get away from your desk can do wonders for both your physical and your mental health.
Upgrade your lunchbox
You are what you eat. If you constantly eat unhealthy food, you’re probably not going to feel the best during your workday.
Changing your daily eating habits can help improve your quality of life both in and out of the office environment. Ask your employer to possibly provide healthier snacks if that is something your company provides. Opting for the bowl of fruit instead of vending machine snacks can make a world of difference.
If you bring lunch, make sure you’re bringing a healthy mix throughout the week. Switch up your normal recipes to include more vegetables and fruits if possible. Little changes such as these can have overall positive effects on your work ethic and your mindset, as well as your physical health.
This may seem like a given, but just being open about your health is one of the biggest and most beneficial changes which you can make to help improve your overall wellness.
It’s good practice for your coworkers too as it aids in the creation of an accepting culture of open discussion between you all.
With such an emphasis being put on removing the stigma surrounding health problems, especially mental health issues, it’s important to remember the impact a simple conversation can have.
