Simple ways your dentist can help improve your smile

Health & Wellbeing

There are many ways that your dentist can help improve your smile and overall oral health! Here is a list compiled by Dr Jennifer Collins and her team at www.dentistry.ie . Dr Collins will be providing free dental consultations to Glandore clients on Friday, the 29th of June and would love for you all to come along for a chat!

Tooth Whitening

Whitening your teeth, if you are a suitable candidate, is an excellent way to brighten your teeth which in turn can lead to a natural, more youthful look. Tooth whitening is a safe, tried and tested dental treatment used routinely in dentistry to improve the colour of your teeth without causing damage. Dr Collins favour’s the overnight system of tooth whitening which involves the taking of impressions of your teeth and having custom-made whitening trays made to fit your teeth perfectly. Whitening gel is then placed into these whitening trays and they are worn overnight a day over 2-3 weeks in order to for the gel to activate and to lighten the pigment of the teeth. It is a very cost efficient, effective way to improve the appearance of your teeth and making them sparkle! And as an added bonus, the whitening trays are reusable, for little cost you can top them up when you need to! Not all patients are suitable for whitening, but if you speak to your dentist, they can assess where you are a suitable candidate or not.

A Scale & Polish

Cleaning your teeth (a “scale and polish”) is a fantastic way to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums. Red, inflamed, bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease. Regular cleans with your dentist or hygienist and the correct brushing techniques are a sure way to reverse most of the signs of gum disease in your mouth. A “scale and polish” also involve the polishing of your teeth with a mildly abrasive paste which acts as a natural exfoliator. This removes surface stains usually caused by red wine and coffee.

Tooth coloured restorations

Many teeth with silver (amalgam) fillings can be replaced with tooth coloured (composite) fillings or porcelain inlays. This is a great way to disguise your fillings on your teeth and are hardly visible. Dark/black teeth can have their appearance improved by the placement of a porcelain crown or veneer.

Orthodontics

Modern day orthodontics provides discreet solutions for adults to safely straighten their teeth. Removable options like Invisalign or Inman Aligners are a fantastic option for patients who do not want a permanent orthodontic fixture in their mouth. These orthodontic appliances can be removed before that all-important board room meeting or night out and replaced afterwards without compromising your end result!

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular treatment that can be carried out by your dentist. They can be used in the lips to plump or fill the lips thus hiding a “gummy” smile or helping make the lips more symmetrical.
